The property is a 1min walk from the main square in the town, the Place de la République. Limoux has an excellent weekly market (held on a Friday) as well as a popular night market held throughout July and August. The town has a good selection of boulangeries, supermarkets, brocantes, cafés and restaurants. There is also a train station, hospital, bank, post office, huge open-air swimming pool, tennis courts, parks etc.
To the west of Limoux are the Razès and Malepère areas – rolling vineyards and sunflower fields dotted with pretty villages and views of the Pyrenees; to the east are the wild Corbières hills – great for walking and trekking, to the south are the Upper Aude Valley and the foothills of the Pyrenees. Winding roads take you up to remote villages and the sublime Gorges de Pierre Lys.
The current owners say ‘We have loved using the house as a base to explore the surrounding countryside – fantastic wild swimming and picnic spots 20 minute drive away in the hills; skiing in the Pyrennees (1 hour); swimming in the Med (45 mins). There are also the beautiful hill towns like St Hilaire, Lagrasse and Mirepoix.’
Carcassonne, with its UNESCO World Heritage title is a 20min drive away, whilst Toulouse, Beziers and Perpignan are all within easy reach.
