If you're in the fortunate position of being able to work from anywhere and are thinking of escaping to the country to make the most of your freedom, a good internet connection is likely to be a key consideration. On that front, France is by far the most developed country in Europe when it comes to their fibre optic network roll out.
The french government has committed to ensuring every property in France as a 'very high speed' internet connection within the next few years. The upgrade programme got under way in 2013 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.
The latest figures indicate that 87% of private households in France will have high speed internet connection by the end of 2022 and 80% of those connections will be via fibre optic connections. These fibre network developments mean that France is currently by far the most advanced country in Europe in this field.
There is a great resource available that allows you to see the internet speed achievable right across France, and if you zoom in, you can visualise the available speeds down to house by house level. This is a very useful tool when creating a shortlist of properties of interest.
The government generated map does not document current speeds achievable, but does detail the progress as it's being made with the upgrade programme.
